Australian punk band DZ Deathrays are set to visit Castlemaine’s Theatre Royal this Saturday March 1 after part of their regional with a brand new release, ‘Like No Other’, out now.
Following on from the group’s boisterous ‘First Night Fever’, ‘Like No Other’ arrived just in time for DZ Deathrays’ Weekend Warriors Regional Aus tour. The band will be joined for the Castlemaine show by Drunk Mums and Mannequin Death Squad.
Spawned from sessions between the unlikely pairing of DZ’s Shane Parson and songwriter Maurice Santiago, PKA Hearteyes, produced by Nathan Sheehy, ‘Like No Other’ channels DZ’s rebellious origins in electro-clash, nu-disco flecked punk rock.
While stationed together under the guise of just creating, Santiago and Parsons would tweak ‘Like No Other’ over a year, littering programmed clap percussion with Simon Ridley’s signature drum sound. The result is a playful twist on the genre, balancing thrill and experimentation into the collective’s new favourite.
“Like no other is a weird song to me,” reflects vocalist Shane Parsons. “Musically it goes all over the place, it’s dancey with a taste of punk and even a slight breakdown in the middle mixed with surf guitar. The lyrics are obscure and I don’t even know what they mean but they sound good so we ran with it! I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks about this new one from us!”
