A talented troupe of students from the Castlemaine Secondary College are hard at work on bringing the beloved ABBA musical Mamma Mia! to life.
The school will be presenting four shows over three big days from May 1 to 3 at Castlemaine’s Phee Broadway Theatre.
The production is being directed by Year 12 student Archie Cowan with support from teachers Jo Tsakoumagos and Kat Vearing.
The massive cast features students from Year 7 through to Year 12 supported by a student led backstage and production crew.
“Students are involved in every aspect of the show from performance, music and choreography led by Teddy Nicholson, to costumes, props, lighting and sound,” Archie said.
Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on songs recorded by Swedish group ABBA and composed by members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. The show also features some songs by Stig Anderson.
The plot follows a young bride-to-be who invites three men to her upcoming wedding, with the possibility that any of them could be her real father.
The music side of the production is being led by musical directors and CSC teachers Ben Nieuwkerk and Kat Vearing.
Archie said the cast and crew have had a lot of fun bringing the beloved musical to life.
“We had two days of intense rehearsals in the first week of the school holidays and we look forward to bumping into the Phee in late April and bringing our show to local audiences,” he said.
Mamma Mia! will feature at the Phee on Thursday May 1 at 7pm, Friday May 2 at 7pm, and Saturday May 3 at 12.30pm and 7pm. Tickets are on sale now at trybooking.com/CUWIG
