The Castlemaine Mail (formerly the Mount Alexander Mail) is set to celebrate its 170th anniversary on May 6, 2024.
To celebrate this very special milestone we are planning a commemorative edition of the paper and a special pop-up exhibition event at the Castlemaine Art Museum.
The Mail team is on the hunt for special artefacts and memorabilia to feature in the display and would love to speak to any locals which may have collected items from the newspaper’s rich past which could be featured in the display such as cameras, photographs, old newspapers or items from the former offices such as metal lettering from the early print presses.
The first edition of our predecessor the Mount Alexander Mail came off the press on May 6, 1854 at 107 Mostyn Street and the paper has been proudly bringing Castlemaine and surrounding districts their local news ever since!
