St Mary’s Primary School has gone through a period of transition and change, but has a new principal on board who is determined to help steer the school into a bright future.
Principal Gemma Goodyear joined the team earlier this year and says she is absolutely thrilled to be leading St Mary’s into an exciting new chapter.
“It is a small school with a big heart. It is a beautiful space with a long history but a modern feel. I have never seen a school better resourced. It’s absolutely amazing!”
A highly respected educational leader, Gemma brings more than 20 years of experience in education, including over a decade serving as a school principal. Living locally in Kyneton, she is excited to work alongside families, staff and children in the community.
Gemma is passionate about creating an education where children are genuinely known, valued and understood.
Her philosophy places children’s needs at the centre of every decision, ensuring that learning is meaningful, engaging and connected to the real world.
Gemma said that for her literacy and numeracy are a huge focus and something which needs to be at the core of any good curriculum.
“However, we also ensure science, PE, music, art, inquiry and hands-on learning are always present,” she said.
“We want to nurture curious young minds and help our students to take a deep dive into the areas that interest them,” she said.
“We want to meet children where they are at in their learning journey and help them develop. It is important that no child is left behind,” she said.
The school has a mix of experienced and newly trained educators, bringing both stability and structure and fresh new approaches and ideas to the table.
“We have recently welcomed on board Coach and Educator Mentor Haley O’Meara. Haley has a wealth of experience and is working in a mentor capacity with some of our younger teachers offering support, advice and assisting with their growth.
“It’s important for all our team members to feel valued and supported and to know they have the backing of their peers,” she said.
“We have also welcomed on board Sarah White in a Wellbeing role two days a week which is fantastic.
“We have reintroduced the school’s popular Farm to Kitchen program, which has a strong focus on sustainability with students growing, harvesting and cooking produce from our school gardens in our fabulous industrial kitchen.
“We also have a strong community focus and we are fostering connection to the land through the Dja Dja Wurrung community at Nalderun,” she said.
Gemma is hopeful they can get the numbers to have a dedicated Prep class in 2027 and encourages parents to begin the enrolment process now.
“We welcome all families of all faiths, shapes and sizes. Everyone is welcome here,” she said.
The school has a number of open days coming up for prospective families to come and tour the school grounds.
“Alternatively, families are welcome to reach out and organise a visit on a day that suits them,” Gemma said.
