The Castlemaine Community Lunch has been serving weekly meals to the community for decades. The affordable, home-cooked deliciousness is available to anyone – regardless of income- and is a great way for people to come together and catch up with friends, new or old.
Lunch coordinator, Carol Angove, started in the role late last year and is an old hat at producing delicious meals.
“I had a restaurant in the old Imperial Hotel back in the day, in the 80s,” she said.
Growing up, Carol’s mum was an amazing cook, so her love of food began early.
“It’s my addiction. If I’m miserable, I cook. If I love someone, I cook for them. That’s my way of feeling good,” she said.
Supported by a fantastic team of more than a dozen volunteers, plus the women from Tarrengower Prison, Carol feeds anywhere between 80 and 120 people delicious home-cooked meals every Tuesday during school terms.
The menu varies week to week and often includes foods from around the world. The meals are vegetarian with plenty of protein ie. lentils, beans etc. (with vegan and gluten-free options available).
“A part of our philosophy is to try and use local produce and to support people in how to make delicious meals,” Carol said.
“It gets me thinking though!”
Carol said being a part of the community lunches brings her great joy.
“I love working with the volunteers. They give of themselves every week to feed people. It’s really special.”
The Castlemaine Community Lunch is held every Tuesday during school terms at the Town Hall and is supported by Mount Alexander Shire Council, Jellis Craig Central Victoria and a range of wonderful local suppliers. Donations are always welcomed and can be dropped off at Community House.
$10 (Full) / $7 (Concession). Kids under 12 eat free.
