Band without Borders are hosting a community dance, featuring folk music from different cultures around the world at the newly refurbished Goods Shed in Kennedy Street on August 23.
The band came into being through an interest in music primarily from Eastern Europe. Founding members attended a Macedonian music workshop at the Roses Gap folk music camp 20 years ago. This initial inspiration developed into open music sessions around Castlemaine. They have since developed into a band.
A large body of tunes were collected by co-founder Neil Barr. They continue to dig into this resource as they follow their curiosity to music from Scandinavia, Latin America, Greece, Turkey, and the Balkans, to name a few.
With a love of sharing music from around the world at dances and events in Central Victoria, they have hosted events at: Newstead Midwinter Dance, Malmsbury Village Fayre, Yandoit Cultural, and the Lost Trades Fair. They also recently played at The Harcourt Bushfire Benefit, and with the Tarab Ensemble at the Theatre Royal.
A 10 piece band of local musicians playing the violin, mandolin, mandola, banjo, flute, whistles, accordion, guitar, double bass and percussion.
You don’t need to bring a partner and there will be a dance caller to show the dances allowing participants to have fun in a truly unique community dance.
Doors open at 4.30pm. There will be food and there is a drink bar available.
All ages are welcome.
