Big scores in CDCA

Castlemaine District Cricket Association senior sides wrapped up the second day of play in round nine on December 14.
Barkers Creek were unable to chase down the 210 run target set by Newstead on day one of play despite a spirited effort.
Castlemaine United also fell short of the hefty 296 run target set by North Castlemaine.
In the final match of the round Guildford 153 defeated Muckleford 117 turning the tables after their 20/20 defeat. See the latest Mail for the full results. Cricketers now enjoy a spell until the new year.

Tennis action

Campaign winds up

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence events in Mount Alexander Shire concluded last Tuesday December 10. 
One of the main activities was for local businesses and organisations to dress up their windows to raise awareness of the Respect Women: Call it Out campaign.
The Castlemaine Mail and Main FM supported the campaign whole-heartedly and both donated advertising packages as added incentives for
businesses to participate. The network drew two business names at random and are pleased to announce Portia & Co from Maldon and Embody Pilates from The Mill in Castlemaine as the winning businesses.  See the Mail for the full story.

Pool side jam

Young people aged 12-25 years are invited to celebrate the end of the school year at a pool party and live music event hosted by Mount Alexander Shire Council’s FReeZA committee. 
The local FReeZA Committee, Eight Metre Speaker, will host the end of year celebration at the Castlemaine Pool from 6pm to 8.30pm tomorrow night, Saturday December 21 to kick off summer with a splash.

Council declares climate emergency

Mount Alexander Shire Council has voted 6:1 to declare a climate emergency with only one councillor voting against.
The public gallery was packed out and the crowd gave the council a standing ovation on its vote at Tuesday evening’s December council meeting in Castlemaine.
Cr Bronwen Machin moved the motion that the council declare a climate emergency and implement “a roadmap that will lead to zero net emissions for council operations by 2025”.
Cr Machin’s detailed notice of motion also included “ensuring that all actions are informed by cost-benefit analyses to ensure that council invests in actions with the best returns while maintaining its services and a sustainable long term budget”.
Cr John Nieman was quick to second the motion, stating “this provides an opportunity to show that we’re serious about this”. Full story The Mail, Friday, December 20.

Dive under the Surface

Castlemaine Community House (CCH) Art Pathways students and Tuesday Studio representatives are set to launch their highly anticipated annual exhibition Surface at Castlemaine’s Lot 19 Gallery tonight, December 13. See the Mail for more.

Newshounds celebrated

The third annual Castlemaine Mail/DON Newshounds awards were held at the Castlemaine Library foyer last Saturday December 7. 
With the generous support of DON the Castlemaine Mail featured 15 Newshounds pages created by student Newshounds teams from schools across Mount Alexander Shire in 2019.  See the Mail for all the winners.

Bus to provide ‘missing link’

Mount Alexander residents will have better access to health, recreational and educational services thanks to a new community bus service supported by the state government. 
Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne visited Castlemaine on Monday to join Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards in announcing $123,000 to purchase a bus for the new community transport pilot program.  See the Mail for more.
