Castlemaine Police are currently investigating multiple thefts and thefts from motor vehicles throughout our area. In many cases, offenders are targeting vehicles that have been left unlocked or contain valuables that are visible from outside.
Acting Senior Sergeant Curtis Dillon is urging the community to take extra care when securing vehicles and personal property.
“While these offences can occur anywhere, they are often crimes of opportunity. Something as simple as ensuring your vehicle is locked and removing valuables from sight can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim,” he said.
“I encourage all residents to take a few moments to check that their vehicles are secure, whether parked at home, at work or while out shopping. Items such as wallets, handbags, mobile phones, cash, tools, keys and electronic devices should never be left unattended in a vehicle. Wherever possible, valuables should be removed completely rather than hidden inside the car.”
A/S/Srg Dillon also asked people to remain vigilant of neighbouring properties.
“Report any suspicious behaviour to police. If you notice people checking vehicle door handles, looking into parked cars or acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, please contact us,” he said.
“Information from the community is often invaluable in helping police identify offenders and prevent further incidents.
“Together, we can make it harder for offenders to operate in our community,” A/S/Srg Dillon said.
“My message is simple: lock your vehicle, secure your valuables and don’t make it easy for thieves.”
